In the Global Liveability Ranking 2016, Helsinki ranks as the ninth most liveable city in the world and the second most liveable city in Europe after Vienna. For the sixth year running, Melbourne ranked as first and was awarded almost the maximum score (97.5 out of 100). Vienna came second and Vancouver third. No city in the US, Asia or Africa made it into the top ten. The least liveable cities in the world were Damascus, Tripoli and Lagos.

The yearly report by the Economist Intelligence Unit is based on five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Helsinki was awarded 95.6 overall rating and maximum of 100 points in both healthcare and stability. Helsinki’s infrastructure received 96.4 points, education 91.4 and culture and environment 88.7 out of 100.
