Sustainable consumer choices and responsible business models are important themes for people in the Helsinki-Uusimaa Region. These themes are highlighted in the cooperation between the European Union, the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council, the Centre for Economic Development, Traffic and the Environment, and other actors at the local level, furthering the sustainability and circular economy in the regional food offering.
Sustainably eating is made even easier regionally, as many restaurants in the capital region are piloting the new label “Climate Meal”. The Climate Meal label helps customers to identify meals from the menu that have a smaller-than-average carbon footprint.
Restaurants providing climate friendly meal options wish to further sustainable eating by acknowledging their own environmental and climate effects, and by developing their businesses in a more sustainable way. The recognisable label can also save the customers both time and effort, as they can enjoy their food knowing that the choices are made responsibly. A Climate Meal is available, among others, in the following restaurants: Dylan, Palmia, Sofia in Helsinki, Löyly. Many other places in the capital region will be serving it during the autumn 2021, as well.
This Climate Meal is only one example of the work done for sustainable food in the region, which the initiative Europe in my region will give information about from 25 October onwards. Sustainable eating is also furthered by decreasing the emissions from food production and by utilizing waste food. Other activities around this theme to be found in Helsinki-Uusimaa are urban agriculture projects in the neighbourhoods of Lauttasaari and Hakunila, bringing food production closer to the inhabitants and surplus food is being used more and more in open co-dining events. Sustainability is delicious in Helsinki-Uusimaa!

A sustainable future of food is being created in cooperation between the European Union, the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council and the Centre for Economic Development, Traffic and the Environment. This is done for example by urban food production trials and by co-dining, which is also furthering social inclusiveness. Climate Meals help everyone make climate friendly choices when the common awareness of circular economy in regional food is increasing. The Climate Meal label belongs to the project Mission Zero Foodprint. The project is coordinated by the City of Helsinki Innovation Company Forum Virium and the other implementer is the Laurea University of Applied Sciences. Current regional projects are also Circular-HoodFood and Cooperatively Catered. The Circular HoodFood project by the Six City Strategy (6Aika) is furthering urban food production and circular economy solutions. It is run by the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY, the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, the University of Helsinki, and the City of Vantaa. The project Cooperatively Catered 2020-2022 is administered by ViaDia Keski-Uusimaa ry (a registered association) and it is offering opportunities for social inclusion, and community activities are created by utilizing donated food. These projects include comprehensive networking by cooperating partners and are financed by the EU, the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council and the Centre for Economic Development, Traffic and the Environment.
